I am an artist living in a charming part of the Western Cape with my husband and one beautiful daughter.
Once a week I attend art classes to escape dogs following me around the house and be inspired in the niche of my art. I also disappear into our spare room every day, to pray and read the Bible - a book which has changed my life from the inside out.
The one aspect of the Bible that transformed me from being a sceptic to a believer, was the whole area of prophecy. Not vague prophecies that can be pinned to anything (like Nostradamus) but specific words from God given to men at different times throughout history, that all point to the same prediction - namely that Yeshua, Jesus, is the Messiah.
Prophecy has inspired many of my paintings and although a picture can say a thousand words, I have decided to speak about the biblical significance behind my artwork.
This painting, Lion of Judah, was done at the request of my daughter who loves the writings of C.S. Lewis. She asked me to do Aslan from the book "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" - so my daughter has the original and I have the print! My print is called Lion of Judah because the lion is the symbol of the Hebrew tribe of Judah.
According to the Torah, the tribe consists of the descendants of Judah, the fourth son of Jacob. The first association between Judah and a lion, can first be found in the blessing given by Jacob to his son Judah in
"The Seed of Judah - The sceptre will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler's staff from between his feet, until (Shiloh) he comes to whom it belongs and the obedience of the nations is His."
The sceptre and ruler's staff indicate royalty and authority. The Midrash Rabbah 97 says, "Furthermore the royal Messiah will be descended from the tribe of Judah as it says
(quoting Isaiah 11:10)
"And in that day there shall be a Root of Jesse,
Who shall stand as a banner to the people;
For the Gentiles shall seek Him,
And His resting place shall be glorious."
The sceptre alludes to the Messiah, to the son of David who will chastise the nations with a staff as it is written (quoting Psalm 2:9) "You shall break them with a rod of iron;
You shall dash them to pieces like a potter’s vessel."
This Scripture was fulfilled by Yeshua - see the genealogy of Jesus in Matthew chapter 1 - and referred to in Revelation 5:5 "...and one of the elders said to me, "Stop weeping; behold the Lion that is from the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has overcome so as to open the book and its seven seals."
I will write posts for my blog wherein I will explain the connection of prophecies of Messiah with Yeshua. Please write to me if you have questions.
